Uche Fuels Comfortable Palace Victory at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Despite embarking on their first-ever European campaign, Crystal Palace are adapting at a rapid pace. Missing star figures like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles left Dublin with a commanding result that all but secures them a spot in the Europa Conference League playoffs.
Another victory in their upcoming match against Finnish KuPS should be sufficient to secure direct passage to the last 16, particularly after a prior setback against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Seize the Moment
This occasion provided a chance for several Palace's fringe talent to shine. Christantus Uche, in only his second beginning after arriving on loan from Getafe, opened the scoring with a clinical goal. Striker Eddie Nketiah added a another, finding the net for the second consecutive match.
A Shelbourne team that had concluded their domestic season were outmatched even for a largely rotated Palace outfit. The Londoners were already depleted by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are out with knee injuries.
Control Asserted from the Start
Despite heavy rain in Dublin, Palace quickly took control. A slick move in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, allowed Nketiah to lay on Uche for a simple tap-in.
Midfielder Adam Wharton went close soon after, driving a powerful effort over the bar. Nketiah subsequently claimed for a penalty after racing into the box, but the referee waved away the protests.
Ex-Arsenal striker did not have wait long to find his goal, prodding home from a yard out after Uche's effort had hit the post.
The home side were clinging on for dear life. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to avoid a booking for two agricultural challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards rattled the woodwork with a header from a corner.
Pino Wraps Up the Game
The match was effectively over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past some weak challenges before coolly slotting a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
Following the break, coach Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to withdraw several players like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse almost scoring with his first touch, but saw his effort blocked.
The youngster was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one attempt strike off both posts before being clasped on the line. Uche also missed a sitter of a chance, showing there is still scope for improvement in his game.
The only concern for Palace was a second-half knock to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This paved the way for 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to earn his senior debut, capping an otherwise positive evening for the visiting side.
