The New Mayor Promises a 'Dawn' for New York City in Maiden Speech
During an inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reimagine” New York City, promising “a different age” and an audacious commencement to his administration.
A Groundbreaking Mayor
The new figure, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.
“A moment like this seldom arrives and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose hold the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani stated.

A Costly Platform
Mamdani now undertakes one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a agenda including:

- Fare-free public buses
- A cap on rents for nearly 1 million households
- A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores
The projected $10 billion cost of these programs may pose a hurdle to secure. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Managing Political Challenges
The new mayor must contend with concern from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past social media posts.
Mamdani has moved to address these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was described as unexpectedly productive.

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky piece of advice about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani ended his speech with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
