Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Evacuations Reported

The Philippines has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials reported that the powerful weather system triggered widespread sudden floods, storm surges, landslides, and destructive gale-force winds, leading to the evacuation of millions of people nationwide.

Extensive Destruction and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, disaster response teams recorded floodwaters reaching rooftop levels and residences washed out by the powerful currents.

Our team saved fourteen people who were trapped atop a house surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. One resident frantically contacted us, reporting the roof of his house was about to be ripped off by the wind. We rescued him along with four family members.”

By Monday, authorities announced at least two deaths: a drowning victim on the island and a second individual killed after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The intense storm was downgraded to a typhoon early Monday as it crossed the main island, home to the national capital.

According to meteorological authorities, its maximum winds decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is expected to lose strength as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service indicated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed hundreds of lives and left dozens unaccounted for before moving on to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for those still missing were halted on Sunday over risks for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is causing cyclones more intense and frequent. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Researchers report that the rate of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has risen doubled in the past twenty years.

Global assessments suggest that severe weather events result in an average of US$3.5 million in damage to the country annually.

The Philippine president issued a state of emergency on Thursday because of the extensive devastation from the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
